Our History

In January 1967, after several meetings in homes, 28 people presented themselves for membership in the Westmeade Baptist
Mission.

On March 12, 1967, Rev. Joe Hoover was called as Mission Pastor.

On October 6, 1968, a service was held constituting the mission into a church. The church, with 81 members, was housed in
temporary facilities. April 27, 1969, there was a ground-breaking ceremony for the first church building. January 1973, Glen Jennings
became the first full-time Minister of Music and Youth.

During November 1976, Rev. Richard Sharp was called as Pastor. Rick Hunt came and served from 1978 until February 1981 as
Music and Youth Director. On Easter, 1980, the congregation moved into a new 550 seat capacity auditorium.

January 1981, Bill Dennington was called as Minister of Youth and Activities. David McArthur came to the staff in November 1981
as Music and Youth Director. In 1983, Rev. James Chitwood, a local pastor, joined the staff as Associate Pastor, Minister of
Education and Outreach.

During April 1985, Rev. Richard Sharp resigned as pastor, and in January 1986, Rev. Joe Lynn Joyner was called as Pastor.
Margaret Morris joined the staff as Youth and Activities Director in May 1986.

Ground was broken on July 3, 1988 for a new 1300 seat auditorium on the Beltline Road property. Dedication for the new building
was held in September 1989.

May 16, 1989, David McArthur passed away. In August 1989, Rev. Bob Waldrop came as Associate Pastor, Minister of Music.
During October 1995, Julie Buckley was called as the church’s first full-time Preschool and Children Director.

November 17, 1996, Bro. Joe Joyner resigned as pastor. Church membership exceeded 1500 at the beginning of the year 1997.

On July 20, 1997, Dr. Al Styron was called as pastor.

On April 23, 2000, Dr. J. Scotty Hogan began his ministry at Westmeade. He came from Westwood Baptist Church in
Alabaster, AL.
